History of the Apricot

The apricot is a fruit related to the plum, but more similar in appearance to the nectarine or peach with colors ranging from yellow to orange. It’s skin is velvety soft. Apricots have a stone or pit type of seed like peaches and plums. It is believed that apricots originated in North Western China near the Russian border and as a result of trade became very popular in the Middle East near Armenia and Syria. Most all of the apricots in America are grown in California and were introduced to the region by Spanish missionaries around 1792. Globally, apricots are also cultivated in areas with dry climates like the USA, Turkey, Italy, Russia, Spain, France, Australia and Egypt.
